On a 2023 earnings call, Elon Musk boasted that Tesla had bagged “over 1 million” Cybertruck reservations and that “demand is off the charts.” So why has the company still sold less than 50,000 trucks since customer deliveries began 14 months ago?

wrd.cm‘Over 1 Million’ People Wanted a Cybertruck. Where Are They?“Demand is off the charts!” Elon Musk crowed at the end of 2023, citing more than a million reservations for Tesla's polarizing polygonic pickup—so why has it still sold less than 50,000?

I'd have to say that normal people who were wooed by Tesla and the lies and hyperbole of Musk soon grew weary after he bought twitted and started to cozy up to the alt-right, incels, and techbros. Once he cozied up to Trump all bets were off. No decent person wants to buy a car from him now.

He charmed us with a beautiful message and car, then betrayed us with hateful speech and actions, now we, like a cheated lover, plot our revenge. Revealing his lies, destroying his $tatus and protesting things he love.

It would be easier to compile the things Musk had actually followed through on. Mars? Hyper Loop? Boring Company? Cyber Taxis? His Tesla- bots? Starlink. And that technology already existed. Just like his working rockets. So that certainly doesn’t count as “genius”.

Demand for a $45k cybertruck with a 3mm welded steel exoskeleton and a 600 mile range while towing? Off the chart. Demand for a $110k piece of crap with 1.7mm panels glued to a fragile cast aluminum frame that has a 90 mile range while towing? Not so much.

Musk has been notorious at over hyping his stock. The current Tesla valuation is still massively over priced with an 85x P/E ratio compared to Toyota at less than 7x. Toyota is likely a far better investment.

Probably bc Elon Musk is a pathological liar and lied about the demand, coupled with the bad publicity about what a piece of junk it was.

Lying to shareholders on earnings call about material facts like "units ordered and sold" is just the kind of thing the SEC and DOJ investigate and seek indictments and convictions for. No wonder Musk said he'd be in jail if Trump lost. #TeslaTakedown

Yeah, demand is off the bottom edge of the chart, so you'll need to flip the chart from landscape to portrait orientation and then you'll be able see the demand line.

🤦‍♀️ Companies and their ideological affiliations change. You seriously saying that people reacting to a recent change in the ideology of the CEO of Tesla are hypocrites because they are also aware of the historical change of the ideology of people (and the actual people themselves) who run VW?

It's wild that VW not only had the whole Hitler thing... But VW almost lost their ability to sell any VW in the US, not too long ago. Because VW was intentionally trying to fool the emissions machines on their "Clean Diesel" cars. And they still have a better reputation than Tesla

I have moved from Toyota to VAG cars because they are cheaper and almost as good in quality. VW (diesel), Skoda(biogas) and Seat(biogas) are nice and economical. Better body than in toyota, even though the technical reliability is not as high as on Toyota.

I’m not even sure it was a lie… it was just $100 refundable to reserve one & $50k to actually buy it haha. Now add in Elon & Tesla’s popularity decline and how long it took to make them. Still a complete embarrassment

Nice article, Wired. Although as one commentor points out, you failed to mention Elon’s far right, Nazi sympathizing and (if I may add) lives-destroying foray into shadow government activity as reasons for his public meltdown.

I am amazed that even 50,000 people are aesthetically vacant enough to overspend on these. My personal cars will always be 1972 & older. These "trucks" reinforce that I have no interest in future vehicles beyond the amazing 60s concept cars we were promised.

One small error in the article: you say the recall proves Tesla only sold 46,000 CTs. It actually only proves they MADE 46,000 CTs. Many of the 46,000 recalled vehicles are sitting unsold in Tesla parking lots.

I work in a public building and someone has one I have parked beside a couple times and looked up close. It really is awful cheap looking. I don’t know how they see out the back with such a blind spot. It’s cumbersome and dangerous. Buy yourself a Tahoe if you are gonna spend that much.

You really should have fact-checked that "I'm really good at predicting things" quote. Musk is astonishingly bad at predicting the future--if you believe he is predicting the future. It's really just that he's lying to consumers to get them to buy his shit.

This has been a pattern since I first started paying any attention to Tesla. He massively overpromises, the stock shoots up, people like Cathie Woods says the stock will 10 times, the stock shoots up more. Then the numbers are much smaller, but hedge funds prop up the share price to limit losses.
