I’m pretty convinced that layoffs are just a part of the way Microsoft does business. They hire in the boom seasons and layoff in the bust, and laying people off or doing voluntary buyouts is mostly a balance sheet exercise for them these days.

60,000 employees is huge. And a voluntary buyout is typically the calm before the storm.

As an IT pro this is running on loop in my head...
