So now there are two main European atproto providers (PDS and client), one is open source and one is closed source. Very concerned that the EU talks about how important OSS is, and then they pick the closed source one :/

One is non-profit, the other for-profit, too. EU picked for-profit over non-profit social good, that was recommended to them by the JRC report I just shared.

Eurosky isn't non-profit last I checked.

Then I'd prefer referring to Modal and Eurosky as "not for profit". From what I see, people assume "nonprofit" in the US sense and as such think that you're tax exempt and required to be for public interest, which is not true.

afaik in Europe we don't really make a distinction between not for profit and non-profit necessarily, or at least not like the US does

Yeah at least in the northern/western quarter, we moreso go for "foundation" (Verein, Stichting, can even include football teams) and "with public benefit status" (which at least in germany can be applied to regular GmbHs as well). Doesn't fit so cleanly to english.

Sorry but it rubs in the wrong way to require them to fit under US terms Sure, the US is a very populated country that has English as the main language, but that doesn't mean they should bend what they are to fit the US (?), they are under a different country and under a different political region

They're speaking english, and the word carries an additional meaning in english. I can translate german "sogennante" to english as "so-called* but the meaning completely shifts despite it being a literal translation (german one is positive, english one can be more negative, mocking).
