In my Data Engineering bootcamp, they had us use cursor to learn how to do pipelines using dlt I finished the homework quickly as it's due in a few hours. I feel like I learned how to use cursor and not dlt Now that the time pressure is off, I'm going to redo it w/o cursor

Teaching particular tools rather than concepts is always inferior. I remember a class I took on project management over a decade ago that was essentially How To Use Microsoft Project versus, you know, project management in the abstract.

Yup! Agree. I feel like I am learning a bunch of tools instead of the concepts. I need to find other resources to help me gain a better understanding.

I recommend against using AI when teaching new topics. It doesn't make sense. You learn nothing from writing a prompt.

yeah, I've gotten into the habit of having AI explain everything in simple terms to me when it produces something I'm unfamiliar with. And even then, it's still best to do your own research/studying 😅

Your experience is consistent with the observations in this paper. The situation was even worse (I am guessing you are above avg at learning things). IME AI coding assistants provide speedup for things you know how to do well enough that you can debug. arxiv.org/abs/2601.20245

It's worth trying different ways from "write a prompt" especially when that means "ask for something I don't understand yet." If you're in learning mode, that's not going to help you much; but you can 100% list your goals and ask for common options, to plan & explain the very first step, etc.
