I like using serverless services on AWS, instead of having to run stuff myself. And I like snappy user interfaces. Also, I like to saving money, and data privacy, so instead of paying SaaS providers $$ and not owning the data, I thought that this will eventually be a sweet spot for some people.

Very interesting. I hadn’t thought about using CloudFront realtime logs as a data source. My one concern here for low throughput websites is the Kinesis Stream - I think that’s actually $.04 / hour, so just under $30 / month, no?

No, it’s using provisioned mode for $0.015/hour * 24 * 30 = $10.80/month. I‘m running this in my account since about a year, and the total costs are $11-12/month. Mileage may very, as it’s usage-based.

Oh, provisioned mode, of course! Yeah, that makes things much more reasonable. At some point I’d pondered with doing something similar but using a CloudFront@Edge function or equivalent to post directly to Firehose. But your architecture looks nice.

Congrats Tobi, that looks very interesting. I have used GoatCounter for a long time, but self-hosting with DuckDB at some point, maybe. I noted it down :) Great work. You have been super productive! Keep it up :)
