i talk about AI discourse using the phrase “purity culture” cause ultimately a lot of what we’re seeing now is 100% the exact same shit that you see in evangelical christianity “where’s the line?” “what’s acceptable and what’s not?” life just isn’t that simple, you’ve lost the plot, you’re a cop

you especially see this happening with the Hank Green situation… his fanbase is now divided over the minutiae of when is it okay to use AI and when isn’t it and ultimately they’re just creating a bunch of goofy rules and legalism that doesn’t make any sense and helps absolutely no one

Some of the issue though is Hank legitimately got addicted to AI, and it's not even 4o. He arguably was using AI like a researcher instead of a therapist and it still sent him to a bad place. Also finding the line is often how society works. But I agree there are bad directions to take it.

I don't know if I'd describe the thing Hank described as "addiction." It wasn't a HEALTHY way of using AI, but many things that aren't addiction are unhealthy.

but here’s the thing, the only reason why we know it’s not healthy is cause hank knows the situation more than we ever could and that was his assessment! but also the contextual details of all this point to workaholism being the root issue

many other people could use AI for the exact same functions and it’s perfectly healthy and fine for them!

The health of an action or perspective is extremely contextual, and, especially in cases of addiction, very much about appearing or acting "normal". It's about how much a given thing impacts your ability to do the things society expects, not about individual flourishing.
