I know this is a thing, & when I freelance I negotiate rates all the time but as someone who also hires freelancers, & only approaches freelancers I really respect, I’m averse to negotiating down cuz it feels devaluing I try hard not to ghost, but usually i go “thanks for letting me know” & bounce

do... people not know about negotiating rates? I've had multiple times now when I quote a client the high end of my rates and they immediately ghost me. I'm not going to lowball myself my dude this is freelance 101

if i approach someone inquiring about their rates and they say, “typically I charge around $x but I *can* be flexible for the right project” I’ll engage more of a dialogue about flexible rates and fit but def depends on the response. if it’s a pretty flat response I won’t go “but can you do LESS?”

in this economy and job market, I see the ethical impetus to come with a counteroffer instead of bailing. good food for thought! i think many of us are quietly terrified of becoming capitalist predators, or being perceived as one. at least, i am 🥹 i love creatives & value their work

I feel this. As an autistic individual, I hate being ghosted, so I try really hard not to leave anyone hanging, but I sometimes miss the subtext and tone. I wish more people were capable of being direct and valued clarity over comfort.
