I rarely notice this, but I believe they are using standard 4:3 CRTs on the set, but they mocked it up to appear as 16:9 screens. Same thing I noticed with Aliens. Set designers were predicting something.

You can clearly see how the bridge monitors in the foreground and further back have a frame over a standard crt to give it the wider aspect ratio. This is in 1978!

Not it this clip. But some of the footage of buildings collapsing was from the earlier film Earthquake. McGyver did a similar thing with a early episode featuring footage of racing Minis from the original "The Italian Job".

I always thought moving their entire fleet far away from the home planets leaving them defense less was rather stupid. The BSG 2003 setup was more subtle.

I always wondered about the imperious leaders' chair... No indication of how he gets up there, how he uses the restroom, why he has this massive room with a cylinder in the center... But more seriously, all the effort that went into making those basestars was incredible.
