There is news I do not like to share. RIP Sam Neill. The New Zealand actor has had a prodigious career, notably in sci-fi. How could one forget his role in Event Horizon (1997)? But also Bicentennial Man (1999), Thor: Ragnarok, the Jurassic Park series, or his appearance in Invasion (AppleTV).

“I do hope I’m not a celebrity because … I think it’s two different jobs,” he said. “You can be an actor — hopefully a very good actor — but it’s another job to be a celebrity, and that’s one you can sign up for or not. And I never signed up for that. I’ve avoided that like the plague."

About Event Horizon (1997) Sam Neill: "It's funny how often that film comes up of all the films I've made. And it's not that it did particularly well. But people seem to have seen it and it just sort of sears itself into their imagination or something."

"People always bring it up. It's a matter of grit to me that it's not longer. Most films are a half an hour too long, at least. But that's half an hour too short. It was cut like it was on speed, or fast forward."

I’ll raise a glass to him. To his creations. He fuelled my imagination when I was young – Event Horizon, Jurassic Park, In the Mouth of Madness... When I read, there are certain characters who take on his face in my mind. Like others, they’ll stay with me forever.

The COVID years were immensely difficult in our house. But one great joy was discovering Sam's video posts on Twitter. He was a friendly, funny and gentle reminder of humanity at a time when that wasn't always obvious elsewhere.

One of my all-time fav actors. Excellent in every project he took on. But 'Bicentennial Man' will always have a special place in my heart. I'm one of the few who loved it. ❤️ #RIPSamNeill
