In the eight years I've been running this account, I've constantly heard people say, “I'm sick of spin-offs, reboots, remakes, and sequels—I want original, good sci-fi.” Well, here it is: Project Hail Mary. If this movie isn't a hit, I'm going to sulk. ☝️

I saw a sneak peek in 70mm over the weekend. It was everything I love about the sci-fi genre. I hope its success leads to more optimistic, touching sci-fi, & less Explode The CGI Villains crap.

I did not read the book first since I can get fixated on necessary changes in adaptations (same for The Martian & Hunger Games). Now that I’ve seen it, I can enjoy the deep dive from the book.

This movie does a great job of blending together quite a few classics: E.T., Interstellar, Arrival, Close Encounters...And it pulls it off well. Some references are more obvious than others😇 Honestly, this movie is really funny—exactly what I needed right now. Fun, entertaining, and touching sci-fi.

My son (11 years old) burst out laughing a dozen times! I think this movie is suitable for kids ages 8–10, but it’s really meant for those 14-15 and up. Even though it’s very condensed, there’s a fairly technical part (about gravity, xenobiology, etc.). A couple of jump scares; of sad scenes too.

I think this movie's box office performance will influence the production of original sci-fi films for at least the next five years. It's in this account's best interest (and sanity) for this movie to be a success. 😁 Success: North of $500M.

Loved the book. Seeing it in an hour here in Paris. Debated about going all the way to an IMAX viewing but chose instead to walk to nearby screening.

I think it's going to be ok. The local IMAX cinema screenings are heavily pre-booked this weekend and the cinema I'm going to (a bit pricier but worth it for the seats and leg-room) looks to be about 60-70% full all weekend. I guess there's a lot of sci-fi fans who've been looking forward to it.

Glad to hear it's good. I'm going to go with a friend who also read the book so we can complain together about all the things they got wrong. (Part of the fun really) But I'm already optimistic it's going to be great.

My daughter was looking for something to read and I gave her the book and she went from "this is a lot of science" to "oh god the alien ship is scary" directly to "I am ready to kill or die for Rocky" in a remarkably short time
