[Thread] 🤟So: Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! When I was 16, this film didn't excite me and I just wanted Independence Day. At 44, I'm so glad this movie exists!

Oh là là, je me souviens avoir baver devant les trailers de Independence Day à l'époque (j'avais 19 ans) pour finalement le voir en salle et trouver le film tellement nul. Jamais revu depuis. Lorsque Mars Attacks est arrivé c'était un véritable antidote à l'étron de R.Emmerich.

I skived off college one afternoon to watch this, & found it a lot more fun than ID4. Now I get to pass one of the lifesize Martians whenever I use the front door of the studio! (It's a little bit of my stop-motion origin story, I guess!)

I had the privilege of visiting the model shop in England which made the full sized Martians for that film. There was one in the hallway as you went it. The guy giving me a tour told me a funny story about one of them going missing as well. www.kirkd.co.uk/blog/index.p...

I'm a decade older & grew-up on the classic 50s movies on Saturday afternoon TV. My loved this movie from day 1, but we've lost sight of it. Haven't seen it in ages. Need to remedy that

I saw Mars Attacks on opening weekend with my cousin of the same age (14 at the time). I think we probably liked it more than anyone else in that screening as we were definitely laughing the loudest and the most. It would be great if it got a re-release with a 3D conversion.

Must reshare my Mars Attacks story thread… :)

Since the Star Wars benefit screening story has gotten so many shares, here's one of my other fun movie memories, also, coincidentally, involving singing. In 1996, Warner Bros. did a sneak preview of MARS ATTACKS! in Knoxville on Thanksgiving weekend, weeks before the film opened. 1/

The odds of a tribute to 50s sci-fi films, with irreverent humor but also a strong budget for such films, are so low. Not to say virtually impossible in 2025. But here it is: this film is simply unique. We're lucky it exists at all. Whether we like it or not, it's a truly powerful proposition.

The story is basic, but that's its strength. When you know the films of the 50s, you react like DiCaprio in front of a TV. References everywhere. But it's not simply nostalgia for movies seen in youth, as many of our recent blockbusters are. It's also the ultimate film in this genre.

Right from the start, the film sets the tone with hundreds of spaceships! How cool is that? Sure, they're identical flying saucers, but it's totally in keeping with the style that inspires this film. It totally respects the idea behind the trading card series released in 1962 by Topps.

There are even mechs! It's so cool. The fun is taken to the extreme, I love it. Martians are so mean, so evil, so devious, it's perfect. The film makes such good use of the key elements of sci-fi. The aggressive human general is perfect, too. 😁

Yes, but if the Martians actually came to Earth, would you rather be turned into a red or a green skeleton? These are the important questions that we always asked each other when watching this movie during a family sci-fi movie night.

I'm a few years older, so I'm lucky enough to have loved it when it came out in part because some of the movies it references had been shown on British TV in the decade prior. Now I've seen a few more of them, I love it even more. And the gleefully evil Martians still out-play even Nicholson. 😁

This is one my faves! Sadly, it terrified our toddler son (I thought he would think it was funny and he did not) and even today if you say “ack ack” to him he gets rattled. Sorry Baboo I didn’t mean to give you a lifelong trauma. :(

Somewhere in the attic of my parents still is the ‚Starlog‘ magazine with an exclusive report from the Mars Attacks set. 🥹 I also was 16 when this movie came into the theatres, and my Friends and I became instantly fans of it. You‘re so right: there is nothing comparable to it. It‘s outstanding.

My best friend in primary school was from a Jehovah's Witness family and they agreed to take us to see Return of the Jedi Special Edition. But when that screening was full I somehow managed to convince them to take us to Mars Attacks! We both watched with glee as his parent's squirmed in their seats

That’s when I didn’t want to sim a tear welling and dropping.. and to make Tim happy in maintaining a stop motion look.. I hand animated the shape of the tear forming and falling. (Back in the day when we did our own sims and lighting).

When I realized this film is more Horror Comedy than usual sci-fi (after getting more into horror/horror-comedy) is when I really finally appreciated it! Kid me was too stuck in my usual genres as well.

Having rewatched both recently, Independence Day has aged terribly; its plot devices are painfully obvious, and its story barely holds together—it’s so crudely propagandistic and over-the-top. In contrast, the madness and biting satire of Mars Attacks! remain very contemporary.
