I keep seeing articles about the latest and greatest.... "High end" CD player. Now, I genuinely do love physical media as much as the next guy, but if you're listening to actual CDs in a non-portable way, do not buy a new CD player. Buy an old DVD player from the late 2000s at a thrift store.

For most people, that's enough. And if you get a good one, it'll have all the buttons on the front that you want. And if you want the best quality audio... Still get the same dvd player, but also buy a good DAC. SPDIF can carry the lossless audio from a CD, losslessly. That's all you need.

CD is digital. SPDIF is digital. As long as the transport (the "reader" portion) isn't literally defective, every single transport will produce an identical output. "Quality" only comes in on the DAC side. Just thrift a DVD player and buy a separate DAC.
