It seems a bit odd: when something is supposedly dying or irrelevant, journalists can't stop writing about it. Consider the curious case of Bluesky, which, according to various pundits, is a failed "liberal echo chamber" that nobody uses anymore.

I agree and the article is well stated. I think some of the visitors have to adjust to the community first, not “walk in like they own the place.” I think more people outside of politics need to join. But people are going to talk about what is on their mind.

Worse, the absolute most garbage racist, bigots and assholes on the planet literally get paid to be racists, assholes and bigots by a fascist tech lord whose idea of free speech is “you can never ever under any circumstances publicly criticize me or my actions“.

Mike's read on the echo chamber debate is similar to mine. I think the echo chamber critique is overblown, and my book Rewire argues that we tend to be more isolated in our physical lives than our online ones. But I do think BSky is less diverse than Twitter was well-pre Musk.

Bluesky’s strength is that we now have a place to support each other, collaborate, organize and feel actual hope! We can overcome. That is what they fear! Thank goodness for Bluesky!!!

The whole “echo chamber” idea is first and foremost disingenuous. Most people talk to who they want to talk to, hang out with who they want to hang out with, read what they want to read. Thats just normal shit. Unless you’re getting paid, an adult doesn’t have to be someone’s captive audience.

There’s an obvious agenda to the criticism. A meta-agenda beyond the talk of bubbles. Bluesky people on the whole are smart and have excellent bullshit detectors. We’re better informed than the elites believed us to be. They are just now finding out and that makes us a threat to their status quo.

Everyone is making a big deal about Vance. The way I have my Bluesky set up, I would never have learned he had joined except for all the noise it generated which found its way to some of the accounts I have on my main list. I don’t use feeds. Not even the following feed. Too much chaff.

Pretty much. As others have noted, the concept of “free speech“ as it’s being pushed by our tech overlords is “minorities need to justify their existence to power structures that intend to oppress them literally forever“.

Slowly but steadily here is becoming everything I used to have on the other place that made it worth being there, before Elno Skum eff’d it up. I’m finding new people with interesting and sometimes challenging views here, but for the most part folks are civil.
