Yes, but we're also talking about libraries focused on technical literature. I loved the MS libary when I started there 20 years ago. Visits became rarer even with just the advent of digital libraries we have access to. I have not been there in years and work across the street.

The main campus library was also the host of the original maker space on campus. It was awesome to work with them on setting that up, and its grown to something amazing under the Microsoft Garage today. It will be missed for sure, but we're not lacking in resources it used to provide physically.

decline of libraries is one thing, replacing books with AI is another. technical books aren’t any different: knowledge is intertwined with presentation, and reading them is a broader and more impactful process than simply acquiring information. it’s mental transformation in many dimensions.

I didn't read the article so I don't know how they are spinning this. As an employee the library gives us access to lots of jouranls, magazines, digital books, etc. My perspective is simply that the loss of the physical location is nostalgia sad but that's it.

Getting rid of the libraries that show whether the answers AI gives you are correct or not? It is rare that we invent a way to be so utterly stupid that is both unprecedented AND completely predictable.

reading isn’t like installing a matrix program into your brain so you have access to all information within. no, reading is a journey taken along with the author. you don’t just absorb the information in a book, you re-live its creation. reading is a conversation.

what you get from reading a book is unique and personal. it varies greatly on what you know, what you don’t know, what you like, and what amazes you. and sometimes a single sentence can make the greatest impact on you. and you want that gone?

“instead of you watching the movie, our AI will just answer all your questions you might have about it. have fun!” no, having an AI trained on a book at hand isn’t a substitute for reading the actual book.
