invitation-only platforms signal exclusivity which adds attraction, but the invitation requirement introduces friction for moving our social network here. our dopamine reserves can only last so long. mastodon has also suffered from the same problem caused by complex enrollment process there.

They explained that it's not feasible for them to open the gates w/o having proper moderation tools in place. That's the official reason given for current invitation only onboarding.

there must be a middle ground between one invite code per month (i guess) and opening the gates. :)

You're right on that. Last officially reported invite code count is 1 code per 2 weeks.

The complex enrollment process is an important obstacle for Mastodon. On the other hand, although I support it, the nature of decentralized applications make things confusing. Technology must be intuitive for a wide adoption.
