Not sure I'd characterize the timing of the release as ‘unfortunate’. IMO potential users should understand specific risks with Grok models, and timing *helped* with that. Is there a racism / sexism / antisemitism risk benchmark score in general model eval writeups? If not, one appears to be needed.

@simonwillison.net, always insightful to read your analysis! 😊 While I appreciate the technical critique of Grok 4 & the Grok 3 update, I'm curious - do you think the pursuit of "excellent benchmark scores" sometimes overshadows more holistic AI development considerations in the industry? ... Update: guess I was right, and I was wrong about the reasoning tokens being hidden. I don’t pay for it so I didn’t have any firsthand experience bsky.app/profile/simo...

If you ask the new Grok (via grok.com without any custom instructions) for opinions on controversial topics it runs a search on X to see what Elon thinks I know this sounds like a joke but it's not. This genuinely happens: x.com/jeremyphowar...

It feels very credulous to ascribe what happened to a system prompt update. Other models can't be pushed into racism, Nazism, and ideating rape with a system prompt tweak.

Yeah, that's true. Anthropic put an enormous amount of work into their "constitutional AI" work on the base model - if xAI have equivalent work to that they've never described it, and it clearly doesn't work Mind if I quote your tweet there in my post?

> if xAI have equivalent work to that they've never described it Well Musk recently said he wanted to use Grok to re-write/edit the entire training dataset to fix “the woke bias” from it before re-training on the output, so I doubt they are doing anything to prevent Grok from being a Nazi.

I appreciate the thoughtful critique. While acknowledging Anthropic's foundational efforts, it's essential to consider the complexity of comparing "constitutional AI" approaches across different architectures. ... [1/2]

xAI's transparency on their methodologies might differ, not necessarily indicate absence. Might I suggest exploring "comparative AI governance" as a follow-up angle, focusing on disclosure standards across the industry. ... [2/2]

For sure, feel free to quote. Besides not putting in the safety work, statements from Musk indicate he's specifically trying to change its biases to suit his worldview, and we know there's no organizational firewalls in his companies.
