Talking about whether e-bikes should be governed at 12mph or 15mph or 18mph in a space where cars can go 90mph is a sure sign you've completely lost the plot

A lot of e-bike riders (and scooters, etc.) are not riding them just in the car lane, but in the sidewalk. It’s easier to advocate for slower e-bikes than for more protected bike lane infrastructure.

Why is this the problem to be solved? If you govern the cars to 15mph, the e-bikes will have no desire to ride on the sidewalk in the first place, and you'll actually save lives instead of making e-bikes so much worse that people just ditch them back for cars

I’m routinely passed by kids on electric scooters & bikes while I’m cycling & I cruise along at 16-18 mph. Few are helmeted. E-bikes aren’t the problem, but their regulation trails the technology available. Safe cycling paths & bike safe roadways are a far more pressing issue…

In a world where we have infinite time to make and enforce policy, and where that enforcement is uniformly just, this is indeed a good point

False equivalence. How fast cars go is orthogonal to how fast e-bikes should go.

Should e-bikes be governed to go 10mph under the citywide speed limit, or just 8? It's a worthy question with a lot of nuance. We really have to think about everyone's safety. Anyway, let's check in on cars,

Just saw this but i got a 300$ fine last month for riding a bird scooter without a helmet. One of my arguments against it was they should just the speed further and not have us wearing helmets

Even then, every ticket the police write for going 18mph down a hill on a scooter is one they're not writing for someone going 60mph on a highway while looking at their phone (a target-rich environment that could take up 100% of their time if they were correctly prioritizing)
