Noticing some folks seem to think writers just say clever things without understanding how the world works, as if we're all naifs who just happen to be good with words instead of people with formal educations and a professional interest verging on requirement in the ability to conduct research

I don't think anyone who's ever read a book has ever thought that. Like. It's the opposite thought to the thought you would have if you even thought about it.

It’s scary how awful stuff gets - and how quickly - when people who don’t read are let loose on governing anything. Trump, Farage, all those tech bros… you can tell they don’t read, listen to music, value any of the amazing history of human thought and creativity.

I understand and agree with what you are saying, but, I’m not sure it applies to the self-help genre. And maybe business writing.

Quoth Keith M Ellis some 13 years ago: "The point is that neither language or economics is considered by many to be things that have characteristics that are independent of deliberate human invention." (1/2)

"Coupled with the fact that everyone has language and everyone participates in economic transactions and structures, then most people believe that the nature of these things, and what should be normative about them, can be understood through little more than intuition and introspection." (2/2)

Reminds me of the folk who complained that David Sedaris's ostensibly biographical narratives weren't 100% factual; like he might have accidentally wound up on bestseller lists because of hilarious things constantly happening to him.

See also: infinite curiosity. The vast majority of my writing time is not spent banging out words. The vast majority of my time is actually spent on obscure websites (sometimes procuring obscure books) researching the minutiae of something that only appears for half a paragraph… but I *must know*.

Also. No. I am a teacher. Everyone I work with thinks they're terrible at the job, including me. I think it's even true of my colleagues in other faculties (Except Julie she's kind of full of herself)

Listening to The Human Division and it's part detective novel, and part sci-fi adventure. All in all the story and characters are 100 percent right there for me.
