Recently installed a 4G backup SIM on my home network for when the actual broadband line is down and I can’t believe I didn’t do this years ago.

What are you using to do it? Last time I looked most of the solutions I could find had take up times so long that normally city fibre has gotten their shit together by then.

I was afraid you were going to say that. I have been thinking about upgrading my core router, the express 7 has served me well, but I don’t have the ports to support this (I think?)

I made the plunge a while ago and have been quite happy. It’s an expensive ecosystem to be in but it does work well. It’s not great if you care deeply about privacy, they do seem to require you have a UniFi account and log in to your local router with it. I’m too old and tired to care.

Yeah, I now have the express 7 and two mesh nodes, and probably next year I’m going to upgrade and start using their cameras and if I can convince myself, I might go for their door access system on my front door.

Ohhh you’re already in, sorry, misunderstood you. I have a few cameras and one of their doorbells and they work great. I like that it’s all PoE and the recordings stay local. The Protect app is very good too.

Do you also use the Apple Home stuff? I currently have an Aquara doorbell and it annoys the crap out of me, but it was basically the only choice I had at the time for something that would integrate with Apple Home, so if I can use the UniFi one then I would be over the moon

I don’t. My overall experience with Apple Home has been negative. I did try a compatible camera and some lights but it was dreadfully unreliable, so I got rid of it all.

I have an extensive Hue set up that I find very reliable, and also Hive talks to it. That being said I would be open to moving to a different home automation platform if I could plug everything else into it.
