Recently installed a 4G backup SIM on my home network for when the actual broadband line is down and I can’t believe I didn’t do this years ago.

Does your broadband go down that often? I was considering it for a while, but realised outages are less than annual. I'd sort of assumed that was similar around the UK 😅

Sadly yes, always for about 1 minute. About once a week. It’s one of those minor annoyances that never makes it to the top of my list of priorities. Several people have said I should talk to my ISP and… blegh. Yes, but blegh.

I was without 1g for a while when I moved and had no estimate for when openreach would come so bought a big antenna thing I stuck to the window to boost the 5g signal, worked really well! Also got an openwrt router that looks like it could summon cthulu

What are you using to do it? Last time I looked most of the solutions I could find had take up times so long that normally city fibre has gotten their shit together by then.

Also using one of these, and built some hooks into the current WAN state to shut down anything data hungry when failover happens 🤓

I was afraid you were going to say that. I have been thinking about upgrading my core router, the express 7 has served me well, but I don’t have the ports to support this (I think?)

I made the plunge a while ago and have been quite happy. It’s an expensive ecosystem to be in but it does work well. It’s not great if you care deeply about privacy, they do seem to require you have a UniFi account and log in to your local router with it. I’m too old and tired to care.

Honestly, I think my bigger problem is that when it applies updates, it reboots itself and kicks everything off the network. And whilst this is probably a user error, I can’t see a way of telling it to do it at 3 am. I can tell it when to check for updates.
