Holy shit: Deutsche Bahn has made the insane decision to stop all train traffic between Düsseldorf and Cologne... during the week of Gamescom.

For those who don't know, this is what every tram station, train station, hen house, and out house looks like during the week. It is packed beyond belief. This cannot be safe with replacement busses.

Apparently this should only affect the east side of the rhine, so trains could still go via the west side of the rhine via Neuss, but that would still cut 50% of the routes, making those trains extra packed

Boy am I glad all those are just my alternative routes in a pinch. My heart goes out to everyone staying in Düsseldorf who will now be experiencing peak sardine conditions.. D:

that … is insane. Like absolutely boneheaded and irresponsibly insane. I’ve been to Gamescom a few times and I’ve always taken the train and they were ALWAYS packed to the brim. What the fuck is this logic?!?!?!

The Logic is: make people book in cologne to avoid those tracks in order to make more money. Every single year they do construction in that week. Plans are done months upfront and they do not get it? Either peak ignorance or intent.

the repair schedule has been set in advance and the entire region has been suffering from the resulting connectivity problems the entire year, why should tourists have it better than us? Delaying plans now probably means a whole bunch of other projects get delayed as a result.

Absolutely, the folks who live there go first. Which is why this is so much of an issue: If 357.000 new people show up, and there isn't good connectivity, then everyone who lives there will suffer for it too. When the schedule was set, it was probably better to leave this week open.
