didn't seem to me that such a capital intensive business could have huge profit margins! but Claude code seems to be the secret sauce

trying out a take there was no moat on "search" and no reason for Google to become the dominant player in a game where anyone could just make a search engine but if you're just better than everyone else you can still win

ehh I don't think I agree. particularly because for so many middle aged people and up Google was their first and only experience with search, it doesn't even occur to them that alternatives exist. also why they paid Apple so much to be the default on Safari

yeah but I'm talking about later adopters. and by the same token Yahoo only still exists today because there is a dwindling but still large population of olds who open by default

I'm just making this up, but -- the money they had to pay Apple with is the difference, that they had that from making the best product and having lots of customers and revenue Anthropic making money and doing a galactic IPO will give them so much power to make these sorts of moves too?

sure, insofar as we end up with structures like "default AI voice tool for the phone" or something. for my money the potential moat is that setting up your own open source model is kind of annoying and complicated, lot of clueless managers will opt for the service
