when people say "do your own research" they generally mean "do not trust anyone with any relevant training or experience"

all the worst incentives of Big Pharma without any of the scientific peer review apparatus to constrain them. that's how people end up gobbling horse paste, fish tank cleaner, colloidal silver etc

yeah. Fauci fucks up with masks (admittedly a bad fuck up) and somehow that discredits all science, but the cranks pay no penalty for being provably 180 degrees wrong about hydroxychlorquine, ivermectin, every vaccine, etc etc bsky.app/profile/idon...

I love the veneer of rational skepticism used to dismiss credentialed experts and endorse uncritical faith in the most obvious hucksters on Earth. The CDC was wrong about something once, so we have to be ride or die for vaccine truth dot wordpress.

All I know is that during the worst of Covid I travelled several times on airplanes always wearing masks as were everyone else and for the first time I never got sick.

You see the same thing with the "mainstream media." To be fair, those institutions are quite rotten in their own way, but the response isn't a heightened level of skepticism or understanding of the perverse incentives and motivations. It's just embracing the worst liars and propagandists out there.

?? What was wrong with masks other than relaxing their use too soon? The one thing I remember best from the winter of 2020-21 was that NOBODY caught the flu because of masks (a lot of them cloth) and social distancing. And I fucking hate wearing a mask.

How did he fuck up with masks exactly? Masks limit the spread of aerosolized pathogens. This really isn’t in dispute. Are you talking about outdoor use? Lockdowns lasting too long?

He did not fuck up with masks. Why do people keep saying this? We STILL wear them in them in hospitals during flu/covid spikes and we never used to wear them before and they help. I haven't gotten covid from working in the ER, ever. Just from your friendly neighborhood Mall instead.

Talk to us hairstylists about masks not working. When shampooing hair, our faces are 10 inches from our clients faces. When shampooing out a color it's 10 inches for 10 minutes. I got Covid four times and it was after a wedding, eating in restaurants, and on a plane to FL. People are such babies.

this is from just before virus hit the US. Entirely in line with pretty widespread guidance from pub health types at the time, based in part on poor data, in part on condescension abt effective use. NYC officials were saying very similar things. Guidance that was rapidly reversed.

I'm an immunologist in drug development. The only thing that was really fucked up was the initial Covid test from the CDC (not Fauci), which did have serious technical issues that rendered it unusable.

It drives me nuts that every scolding article about how public health officials made "mistakes" leads with this example. Feels like a media gotcha with no real connection to the underlying conflict. The people who don't like Fauci, also hated masks.

So the "fuck up" is not getting to the point (shortages) until the end of video? People I hear bemoaning a "fuck up" with masking are usually implying incorrectly that masks don't work or cause harm.

At first they told us to wear makeshift masks because there weren't enough good ones for frontline healthcare workers. The makeshift masks were mostly worthless. Not sure that is on Fauci though.

Regarding masks, there was a bigger mistake that preceded Fauci's, and that was the failure of the entire pandemic preparedness "team" to make sure that masks were stockpiled. If this had been done, there's no mistake for Fauci to make. This is a DHHS-level mistake. It probably goes back decades.

"Years of documented, reproducible experimental research have reliably shown that the scientific method cannot produce reliable results"

"there’s actually no way of knowing if yours is the right science," that one is going to be ping ponging around the ole brain cave for a long time

In her defence, Neitzsche did argue that the fundamental problem of philosophy was 'the evaluation of values.' From what perspective do you do that? It drove him so crazy he decided to become an uber-mensch.

Fauci anticipated our human tendency to be extremely selfish. I remember very vividly how quickly the good ones sold out. Health care workers needed the protective gear most of all and it was immediately in short supply.

yeah that's the problem though, he knew masks work--this has been obvious for 100+ years--he just lied about it to achieve another goal. not his job, seriously undermined trust, and it didn't even work

And then when we did have enough masks, people were told to wear them everywhere, even outdoors where they are not needed unless people are literally sneezing on you. At the time, I did some CFD modeling of exposure in different cases and < 3ft outdoors was still way better than >12ft indoors.

Imagine if he had said "go get a mask and wear it all the time". We would have instantly run out of PPE for healthcare workers and first responders. And likely some kind of "rationing" by the fed government (led by Kushner). And would have likely prevented the option for stay at home orders.

Blatantly lying to the public permanently damaged trust in health authorities. And no, we wouldn't "instantly have run out of PPE". Because there were millions of ppl who could sew cloth masks - something that bafflingly never occurred to these authorities - and few believed the idiotic lies anyway.

what he should have said imo was something like "masks work, but we ask that you do not go out and buy them at this time, hospitals are short and need them the most. in the meantime here's how to make a cloth version." in any case we did run out of PPE anyway, Trumpers were stealing them

He never *lied*. It was about what risk threshold you're talking about. Used properly and fitted well, an N95 *can* almost eliminate risk. If not, it could reduce risk significantly but not eliminate it. And less good masks, even worse.

And if you think that this one thing "undermined trust", you're actually just participating in propaganda. The undermining trust was coming from exactly one group of people, and it was entirely people who wanted to shed masks, incinerate the vaccine, and spread the virus far and wide.
