So the Dem takeaway should be Stand Up to Bullies. 1) It's the only language they understand 2) It will impress the voters more. Be more AOC, less Schumer.

A lot of that comes from Dems or others making public statements calling Dems weak--which THANK GOD fewer are doing now. It's more a matter of perceptions than actions. Dems are fighting in every way a minority can so the way to be SEEN as strong is to ratchet up the rhetoric--which they are.

Any weakness I see in the Democrats has less to do with their electoral performance than with their legislative work. We've seen them get steamrolled so often by Republicans who are not afraid to bend rules and make up new ones to block SCOTUS noms and pass shitty legislation.

"oh god, what do I say to get you hogs to vote for me? I'll do anything, I don't have any underlying beliefs or principles whatsoever"

This, right here, is the underlying problem with the modern leadership of the Dems Progressive v. Moderate, whatever, I have my preferences but I can compromise. What's hard is believing in someone who doesn't actually believe in anything

Yes! It’s why Sanders is still the most popular American politician. Even if people don’t agree with all of his ideas, they believe that he believes them and that’s worth something

I always think Zohran Mamdani attending the Rally for Trans Youth when his poll numbers were in the single digits. It was so exciting to see someone being principled! The lesson for Dems seems obvious, yet we're all talking about Gavin Newsom.

As I said in another context, authenticity will be the winner in '28. bsky.app/profile/kayk...

Newsom's problem isn't left/right, it's authentic/inauthentic. And I think that's the measure that will be most important in the '28 primary & election - authenticity. Folks used to think that was Trump's strength, until he made it clear he was just in it for the Epstein class.

This to me is the main lesson from Zohran. Not necessarily that left policies are good electorally (even though I think they are) it's that if you actually have strong convictions on something even if voters disagree they at least respect you. And that gives you space to get them on your side

I an extreme left lifelong democrat voter think the party is out of touch. They seem to think this criticism only comes from the right. I think it’s equal in both sides. The difference is the people who think this on the right will never vote for democrats but far left people can be won back.

The interpersonal equivalent of a popularist is a hollow, people-pleasing person with crippling social anxiety who has no sense of self or real direction because they are defined by everyone around them. Normal people are not attracted to them.

it's comprehensible if you understand latent authoritarian americans. Somewhat rich and wealthy, sometimes the 1%ers in the country, feel excluded from society culturally and more than a little bitter about it, deeply christian so they crave a moral leader who tells them they can be awful.

Interesting to me that consultants' & Dem insiders' advice is to "moderate"—shed progressive positions to win voters—but in fact, that would just REINFORCE a view of the party as "weak." Trimming sails, soft-pedaling values give the impression of lack of ideological self-confidence: fear, weakness.

Had the same thought.

The drive to moderation and centrism, backed by WAR and data analysis, is compelling to me on an individual candidate basis. But it reinforces the biggest problem Dems have, which is appearing fickle and unprincipled, and that hurts everyone, effectively lowering the baseline support.

Left versus Right. Capitalism versus Socialism. Christians versus Muslims. Whites versus The Color Of The Day. Those simple distinctions are easy to manipulate when people don't really know what's going on. A good education system and honest journalism won't help much. Capitalism, baby. Profit!

Homer derisively saying “Stand up for yourself, poindexter!” to Millhouse is the skeleton key to understanding Dem electoral performance post-Obama. Loser stink - rather than ideology or policy - is the most toxic thing imaginable to the marginal voter who swings elections. They are Homer.

I'll disagree. Populism isn't seen as weak, moderates are seen as weak. They are trying to find the deal, the middle ground, not tell the other side "We are doing this" Populism is vibrant and strong, just look at how Bernie is viewed
