Potential Via expansion is welcome news, but I hope Ottawa takes a closer look at how to ensure its financial sustainability. Via shouldn't be a for-profit business, but the deep, persistent structural deficits on *every* single route leave it at the mercy of capricious senior government funding.

People often think of Via as similar to Amtrak, which makes money on the Northeast Corridor and spends it to subsidize long-distance trips. But that's not the case: Via loses $50.55 every time someone goes from Montreal to Toronto. Surely this is a solvable issue.

Alto *should* be operationally profitable, but that raises the question of whether non-Alto VIA services – on or off the corridor – will be entitled to such a cross-subsidy.
