Native vs cross-platform for an indie habit tracking app in 2026: if you were starting fresh today, which would you pick and why?

Native all the way. With Ai-aided coding you can write and iterate on one platform and then port to the other. A couple of years ago I considerered diving into react or flutter, now I don’t see the need

It depends on the app. Are you going to have a custom UI (part of the app moat) or are you using standard UI. Custom can be cross platform.

last time i tired it was (after it got open sourced) it was basically unusable. constantly avoiding using language features and apis because they weren't implemented. and the android performance was ABYSMAL

Can you elaborate? I honestly interested, because I was using it for a basic app and didn’t have issue. Performance in Android was fine.

Throughout my career the question of cross-platform vs. native was always a thing and, while good on paper, it was oftentimes leading to the smallest common denominator and therefore a lot of tradeoffs.

I was pondering that same question. I started my journey with Flutter, but abandoned it as I hit too many walls. I then fully committed to iOS native with SwiftUI and it's just one tight ecosystem where everything fits. I'm now building the same thing for native Android. Samesame, but different.
