One thing I've been toying with, instead of talking about "PDS" and cryptic nonsense like that is: Atmosphere Service Provider, like an ISP but for the social internet. Part of the motivation is that "Sign in with Atmosphere" only works if people have seen that before.

I've changed my mind. now I have a better idea: the PDS should be called a "provider" to normies. 1. it's the *second* most clear word about what it does and isn't intimidating 2. it's familiar, given we talk about cell network providers, and that's basically what a PDS is 3. I like it even more

This 👍🏻️ Still struggling to update my social page (think Linktree but not on Linktree) to describe it accurately, where I used to have a list of services — but now trying to rephrase it in a way that users may chose what app to use e.g. mu vs bluesky etc…

Continuing our advocacy tour for this phrasing... Any Atmosphere Account works! (including Bluesky)

We've had good experience using this: Any Atmosphere Account works! (including Bluesky) Folks seem to understand it with that phrasing.

That is to say we should be more or less mirroring the layering of another protocol in communicating to normal people? I have said (and am not unique in saying) that each time another layer gets added to the stack there's a cambrian explosion then consolidation (eg TCP -> AOL, HTTP -> Meta) - ...

The ATProto move is a push to at minimum reboot the explosive stage (and maybe keep it open this time) - if we want to talk about this we say atmosphere runs on internet to mirror "the net runs on your phone" -> "facebook is a website" layering?

Sorry, I'm not sure I get what you're getting at :-/ People don't think in terms of layering. "The internet" is all the stuff that's in your phone. The social internet is just the social part of that.

oh hey, is it OK if I ask a question: If I have ATProto dev questions, where is the best place to ask them?

the Philippines, and I think Indonesia and Singapore, also use "Social Media" side-by-side with SNS. If we go back 20–30 years ago: - "Text"/"Texting" was exclusively a Filipino terminology. - SMS was the term used by the rest of the world (which is unknown to this day in the Philippines). The

point is that culture and language plays a role in communication, and I think this is why the community can't agree on anything. 1. We're all from different cultures and languages. 2. We have different valid experiences and views on what works _locally_ (can't emphasize that enough). 3. There is no

single authority managing the communication for the ATmosphere network. (100% decentralization isn't good, like in this case (look at the Fediverse network, people hate the term (was coined since 2010/2), proposals were given, but no one agreed which new name to use)). For this discourse to be

Changing your phone provider = changing your atmosphere provider → keep your phone number = keep your identity (username) Changing your phone = changing what app you use* → keep your contacts & photos = keep your followers, following, posts, etc. You can change providers without changing phones.

I was thinking about this outside of the atmosphere specifically. Could I make an extensible router “box” that I could get ISPs to give out and provide value add services. Like photo storage you can add a disc box that gives the thing enough storage. Etc etc.

I dunno how universal “ISP” is either, I often here it colloquially and inaccurately referred to as “the wi-fi”

And with people buying their "wifi" from their cable or cellular company I sometimes have to ramble off the names of the companies providing such things tbh (I really hate saying this but it's true.)
