Discworld QOTD, from Guards! Guards! 'People who are rather more than six feet tall and nearly as broad across the shoulders often have uneventful journeys. People jump out at them from behind rocks then say things like, "Oh. Sorry. I thought you were someone else.”'

An interesting piece of trivia about this: the parable of faith moving mountains would have been delivered to an audience *which had in fact seen* a mountain get demolished and removed on their lifetimes (a construction project of one of the Herods who wanted to improve the view).

the - quite literal - power of belief is one of the underlying building blocks of the entire Disc, from Om in Small Gods to the incredible nonsense in Hogfather (Bilious, the Oh God of hangovers) if you believe there’s someone stealing your loose socks, well, now there is

That was brilliant in Small Gods. Especially the largest organized religion losing its god because it has zero actual believers. And the ending, forget which book, with Mr Tulip (?) reincarnating as a potato with its ultimate fate.

I’ve always loved the spontaneous divinities from Hogfather. It also made its way into my homebrew tabletop stuff! One of my best antagonists was a guy trying to build a cult of belief around a dying loved one so they could ascend and be saved

2. I especially like the assertion that while the Gods themselves are all petty some of their True Believers have done genuinely good things in their name. Of course others have done Bad things. Once again it’s humans themselves who have the greatest capacity for Good or Evil
