so is the plan to just say “we have a ceasefire, the strait is open” indefinitely while taking potshots at each other and not actually opening the strait and hope the market never notices?

This should be Trump’s plan for everything. Just say it. And hit the golf course. Republicans will believe it. The media will bothsides it and move on in a day. Democrats have no clue how to take advantage of anything.

Trump can only hold back reality for so long. My guess is they’ll keep up the act through the midterms at which point they’ll immediately blame the new Dem majority in the House. There’s a 50/50 chance the voters blame whoever’s the incumbent when reality hits, not who started the mess

Finally found a source for a free daily graph of the Hormuz traffic. Yep, the strait is still closed. Israel keeps expanding its genocide, and Iran is apparently uninterested in giving them a pass on that ongoing MOU violation.

Yes, MAGA's all about manufactured reality. Regardless of what's happening with Iran, their narrative around midterms will be 1) Iran deal = greatest ever diplomatic achievement, 2) the strait's open, 3) *we* prevented Iran from dropping nukes on *your* head. "How could you not vote for us?" Watch..

China stopped buying which has compensated for the lack of supply. No one knows they could do that, so no one is sure if they have massive reserves or are shutting down factories or what, so we also don’t know how long they can go without

China has been doing a massive renewables build out in recent years so I guess that paid dividends. Everything else that comes through that strait, especially fertilizer, is screwed. Never mind all the derivative products produced with petroleum. The markets eventually have to contend with reality.

It’s going to become irrational the other direction at some point and will be hard to break out of. I think there’s a lot of generational turnover that traders just don’t remember in the bones what the dot com bust and the Great Recession were like. It will be novel for the kiddos.

This is a pure guess. Another possibility is that the market (but not any trader) knows there is a lot more oil being smuggled out of the region than any party can admit. Plus some countries forcefully had to use less oil products.

Smuggling to any appreciable amount isn't physically possible, esp now that Russian exports have effectively stopped. What's happening is that countries on the downstream end of the supply chain are hit hard, while the US (a net oil exporter) pretends everything around the world is just like the US

I get that but so far the more developed economies that are supposed to be more vulnerable like Japan and Korea have held up. Australia just reported that they have roughly the same amount of reserves as before the closing. I think that type of data is what markets are reacting too.

But the straight has to potential for it to be open, therefore we can value it at its potential value instead of real value (atleast thats what my broker said to buy spudx)

The market may be irrational. Storage tanks, however, don't care about rational and when they're empty they're empty. At that point "the market" will have to deal with high demand and no product.

This is exactly what happened during covid. The problem is, that Trump on a really fundamental level just cannot comprehend something that isn't amenable to bluffing and social media attacks. He thinks he should be able to will and game everything from his phone. And so goes the whole government.

What is the average P:E ratio now, 45, 47? The market is acting like the see-no-evil monkeys except they're all attacking each others' sense organs with screwdrivers. Everyone is ruined if the vibes are even scuffed.
