it makes me cry every time a dev makes a game where everything is pixel art except like 2 of the main ui fonts are inexplicably clean smooth high resolution vector fonts, you NEED to COMMIT!!!!

this is poppin off a lil so hi i'm rhia, consider following me if you like rants about video game ui, complaining about mahjong, if you're a new blood fan, or just really wanna make a trans girl witch happy 💜

happy (belated) #portfolioday! i'm rhia, it's hard to fit everything i do in 4 small images... so open each one to see more! while much of what i do is built with my own graphics, i also do a lot of compositing work so i owe a great deal to the art i've been able to work with, support artists!

I saw someone giving gamedev advice the other day and said that audiences hugely dislike pixel fonts and it's best not to use them, saleswise. And that seems... Insane?! Who are these people? I've never met one.

There are three categories: A: genuinely good pixel fonts B: nostalgic pixel (only legible because of NES/DOS/C64 nostalgia) but hard to read for young people C: just bad pixel fonts Also, pixel fonts of a resolution different from the background or misaligned from the raster look bad.

sounds like someone somewhere did one of those "focus groups" to manufacture data to support their position because it's unmistakeably false; stardew valley uses pixel fonts despite having no commitment to any specific pixel resolution, especially in its UI

THANK YOU it's like decorating a room entirely with wood and iron midcentury modern furniture except for one colorful plastic chair oh, but the chair is comfortable? i don't care! it ruined the entire design! find a comfortable chair that matches!

I think it's probably a thing to make it easier to read? Either way, I think it's better to make it an accessibility option

absolutely! accessibility options are always welcome, there's also the option of keeping pixel art for the game itself but doing high dpi stylized ui, the ff tactics remaster is sort of a tangential example since it does play with the game art a bit but i think it's close enough, and gorgeous too

I plan to do a similar thing too, it does annoy me when the UI is also pixelated except the text, so like...yeah, I'm picking a lane lol

this isn't about retro authenticity though, this is about aesthetics and stylization, it is objectively incongruous to have a chunky pixel ui with smooth text, it rarely if ever looks good and outside of being an accessibility option, should be avoided for the sake of a coherent visual presentation
