Each time I join a new social app on the Atmosphere, I'm starting from zero. Why? I've been building my network here with intention. I started from zero ~18m ago. Why make me do it again? The people I follow aren't accidental, they're a considered list. Making me rebuild that in a new app is a tax.

This is also works against builders. The fastest route to an active community is letting people arrive into one they already belong to. If I see my people on day one, I can use that product socially from day one. Steer me into a new empty graph schema delays the moment a product feels alive to me.

One clear benefit of an open social graph is its portable, interoperable nature. Every app that rolls its own social graph quietly opts out of that value for users, and for itself. The Atmosphere's long-tail value lives or dies on graph portability. Share the graph, and everyone wins.

You don't **have to** abandon your own graph lexicon if it genuinely serves your product's needs. But why not default to app.bsky.graph.follow ? Considering letting me opt in to your schema, not out of mine. The Atmosphere grows faster when networks connect and compound, not when they fragment.
