Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

This the actual reason that Sanders, Reich, and the rest of Marcuse' "New Left" have broken coalition for the last 60 years. They HATE liberal democracy. They HATE progress. They want to burn it to the ground so you can rise from the ashes like a phoenix in your true proletariat identity.

Multimillion $ CEO salaries are not sustainable! Staff layoffs, product shrinkage, stockmarket insider trading, insurance manipulation, lucrative military contracts, & perpetual payment systems do not make a healthy economy.

The only difference is that the Gilded Age had top hats and steam engines; now we have Patagonia vests and algorithms that automate the inequality. Same script, faster hardware.

When you look at this image you can easily understand what Robert Reich is telling us. What happened to antitrust laws that prevented monopolies from taking over America and consolidating all the power in the hands of a few selfish egos?

THEY APPEAR NOT TO BE ALLOWING A COMMON GOOD ANY LONGER. THE REGIME WILL DENY ANY VOTES AGAINST THEM IN THIS ELECTION. THIS DEMOCRACY HAS FAILED. IT IS TOO LATE.

Worse than that. While Republicans worry about trans people in sports, Democrats worry about billionaires taking over, losing freedoms, etc. But historians are worried about WW3, Nazis, USA-Russian-China plans to carve up countries. The Nazi parallels are there and Trump is working Putin’s plan.

Yea, keyword being progressive. Not liberal sex policies as an excuse to loot taxpayer funds. Perhaps we can get back to capitalism and not corporate socialism. I'm afraid if you want new progressive politics you absolutely need new people and term limits. A complete overhaul of government.

The problem is in a sane world the so called progressive stance on universal healthcare, food & housing security, excellent and safe schools, clean water and air should be a baseline for common human dignity and $trillion defense spending and tax cuts for the wealthy should be obscene & radical.

I agree about the oligarchy,But we don’t need another movement that treats capitalism itself as the enemy. We need a Democratic Party that stands up to corporate power, defends fair competition, and actually gives working Americans a reason to trust it again. That’s how you win.

What we need is to disband the Anti-American Fascist Party of Pedophiles (formerly known as the Republican party). And then we need to form NEW parties by splitting up the Democrats. We need four or five parties. The two-party system does not work.

It's not balanced. Pure socialism doesn't work. Pure capitalism doesn't work. You need to balance them together, as has been demonstrated by many countries around the world.

I don’t think you really want to know because I assume you do know. I can appreciate a rhetorical question. You would have to distinguish between if you mean Democratic Socialism or Social Democracy first to get the most accurate list. Happy to provide it. Then again, where has capitalism worked?

Nothing wrong with capitalism per se. Every economic system needs some regulations to function well. Without it you get monopolies, exploitation of workers, fraud and a host of other ills. Unfortunately the pendulum has swung too far in the wrong direction. The same applies to governments.

I would respectfully disagree about capitalism. It’s not the regulations that are the problem; the regulations simply try unsuccessfully to change something fundamentally toxic in its engine. The problem is it’s based entirely on the subordination of human needs to private profit.

No!!!!! We’ve had that at least since Nixon. We don’t need it again, FFS. And if you’re wealthy or hoping to be, tough shit. The clean water and the rest will be worth it.

The oligarchy and “corporate power” is just capitalism, tho. IDK how you can ask a party to oppose those while also being pro-capitalist.

At least the old robber barons had to pretend to build something. This crew just buys the refs, guts the rulebook, and calls the looting a business model.

We have been experiencing the 2nd Gilded Age since at least 1981, when President Reagan fired the air traffic controllers. And Trump has shifted into maximum overdrive warp speed. #GreedIsGood #SecondGildedAge #2ndGildedAge

Unless the crooks & lawbreakers are held accountable, the flaws in the Constitution are fixed, & Citizens United is overturned, everything that the Dems would have done to win, will been done for nothing.

Many people have pointed out that he doesn't actually have any money at all. He has "future projections of wealth" based on his companies making profits (but they never do) and him continuing to get government grants (which seems unlikely given his inability to follow the law).

Sure I meant his net worth, true. But the fucker could liquidate. That’s what most of us are having to do, sell our shit to survive.

There was an interesting article about how when you have those kinds of fake money shares, you get mortgages with negative interest and other freebies that the rest of us don’t get.

You can’t fight for democracy first? Parties are not the priority. Saving the world from nuclear disaster and saving our democratic votes matters first. If we have learned nothing, have you not learned ideology first is destructive. Democracy above all else.

Unfortunately it took a Great Depression and two world wars to finally get rid of the barons. A lot of lives were lost or ruined during that time.

We built the federal super highway system using marginal tax to prevent too few people from seizing too much money & power. The marginal tax system served US far better than the current healthcare-is-a-luxury system & PACs buying our politicians.

Just respond . Hard to get people off the coach to vote when they care more about The Price Is Right than they do their future.

It took two World Wars and a Great Depression to turn the ship partially around and realize the government serves the people and it must do more for the common good. Then it took only another 40 years or so for Reagan to bring back Trickle Down policies that have fucked us once again.

IMO we are. I hope we realize that it will be a lifetime commitment, and that unpleasant actions are necessary and justified.

Robber barons with surveillance tech, drones, satellite heat rays & zero empathy. We have a pressing climate crisis that wasn't part of that era. This is so much worse! We aren't voting our way out of this. The sooner we realize we're in a war between the people & the billionaires, the better.

Indeed it is RR. In some ways the US has always been an oligarchy masquerading as a democracy. Those men who met in Philly on 1787 were hardly going to write a constitution, however enlightened, that ran counter to their interests which is why the slavery issue was not resolved then.

- Democracy may be an ideal, but was never imbedded in the US Constitution - Founders mistrusted the common citizens - Because of profound differences between the States, the only hope of forming a stronger Union required a guarantee of individual State autonomy *Good book that discusses oligarchy:

Interesting parallel. Civil war ends with African American emancipation. Reaction leads to segregation. Oligarchy rides backlash. International order breaks down. WWI. Fastforward. Civil rights fight. Desegration. Backlash. Techno-oligarchy rises. International order breaks down. Hybrid WWIII.

As Palantir oligarch Peter Thiel put it in 2009, “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible”. By which one assumes he meant that his own freedom as a billionaire, his freedom to put his own nefarious plans into action, is threatened by the democracy the rest of us cling to.

Yeah, a 'new progressive movement.' Because the last one gave us open borders, $9 eggs and guys in the girls' locker room. Hard pass, professor.

In Trumplandia…🇺🇲's Leader’s 19th Century Who Rules With A GoldFist✊Says: 🇺🇲🏛️🏴‍☠️👑🎃👐🏻💬 “Billionaires First! Democracy Can Wait!” 📜 Divine & Demonic Wisdom 📜 HEAVEN'S😇🪉🙏🏻MORAL: “SERVE THE PEOPLE; REJECT GREED!” TRUMPLANDIA’S😈🔥🖕IMMORAL: “ENRICH THE POWERFUL; IGNORE THE POOR!”

Healthcare for everyone, free college, at least a rich tax of 65%. How do you think the highway and freeway systems were built. Minimum wage at least enough where you can only spend a week's wages on rent. In 87,a house was 90 grand, today, 300,000. Make people's lives better.

Look to the “rust belts” of America ( and other Nations) and one can see the effects of unbridled greed , disinterest in the common good and the rift between Capital and Labour invariably against the interests of the latter

Which depends on new progressive voters. These elections are as much a study in voters as who they choose to elect. We hopefully discover the USA doesn't want to be a dictatorship allied with Russia. It's a numbers game: how many MAGA, Christian Nationalists and racists will turn up for their idol.

I recently watched the Gilded Age. Take away is not much difference with the oligarchs from them and now, at least their mindset. The Robber Barons had politicians in their pocket who believed that if they helped the RBs, than the RBs would feel generous had help those without. Never happened.

I'm skeptical the politicians believed in trickle down and shared prosperity. I assume same as today, as when the GOP since Regan at least have *said* they believe it, casting greed and imbalance as some legitimate theory, to enable behaviors clearly without merit and damaging to society.

The parallels are eerie. The hopeful part of me takes some comfort in the fact that we have been here before and we changed course. The angry part of me is pissed that we have to do it again and that we learned so little that it is happening again.
