my favorite aspect of the Carrie rewrite Is the dimension given to Chris Hargensen in recent years writers have tried, mostly unsuccessfully, to add depth to villains in the original De Palma film, Chris was a vapid asshole with zero backstory now we see her rendered with actual pain

but the pain isn’t the notable aspect more notable is her choice to react to it with furious self-destructiveness it was interesting to both understand her pain and hate her for her reactions to it

it's very well updated, and everyone at the school is attentively written I feel like that's important because it makes the viewer think about the reality behind those stupid teen slasher flicks from the 70s-80s it's like, "oh! they were written as caricatures for better studio ROI!"

I also wanna underscore that Stephen King was intimately involved in this remake and was instrumental in developing Emaline, who moved things into a new plot and this was clearly not a George Lucas situation (the one where he ruined Star Wars) so purists can fuck right on off

yes hard to do difficult to balance “yes your circumstances are terrible, and I understand them, but you still really really suck”
