I am so grateful for my wife's Canadian citizenship. Our oldest started college at a top school in Canada, and all in tuition + room + board + ancillary costs is ~US$22,000. This article points out that the UC schools, for in-state students, is over $50,000. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...

That UC price tag is why Central Valley access matters so much. A $50k in-state bill shuts out the very families UC Merced was built to serve. If the mission is access, the record should show who actually gets in — and who gets priced out.

UC charging Californians $50K while a top Canadian school charges $22K all-in should embarrass every trustee. Public universities run on public money — their budgets, contracts, and enrollment math should be public records anyone can read, not a brochure.

But it's not really. I mean good that Canadian schools are affordable, but the listed price for a US public University is not what most in state residents pay. It's just super messy and depends on family income.

That being said, you pay more for a Rolex than you do a Swatch. Never got a single job from UCLA but dined out on CMU for 20 years. CMU is free for under $75k too. (Wish it was double that)
