If you praise the Confederacy, everyone knows what you're doing. If you praise Rhodesia, though, you still get that little frisson of naughtiness, the little tingle of rebelliousness that can power you through the drudgery of your eight-hour shift at your dad's car dealership.

motherjones.comHow a defunct white supremacist state became a cult favorite on the RightFrom battleground candidates to Elon Musk, Republicans can't stop posting wistfully about Rhodesia.

Thanks for that. I will read it. I wasn't aware that the Right were seizing on Rhodesia now. Ironically Mugabe could serve pretty much as the template for Trump's leadership style. I hope Mother Jones doesn't gloss over that.

I feel like Rhodesia is way more controversial than CSA. At least with CSA, people can pretend it’s about “heritage” or states rights or something. With Rhodesia, there is nothing else going on besides white supremacy, like they can’t even pretend

I tagged Robert Evans because there was an excellent episode of Behind The Bastards on Ian Smith. Basically Rhodesia went down in a hail of chemical weapons.

Yeah got a book by a south African air force pilot who served throughout the bush war the Rhodiesians would call the boers neanderthals which was not very smart when it was south africa keeping them in the fight...

I actually had a friend from Rhodesia, so, no. I find the Rhodesian project even less sympathetic than the Confederacy. Bunch of weirdos squatting in paradise.

Quite a few white Zimbabweans where I grew up. As much as I teased my ex about being racist because it wound her up (her husband does exactly the same thing, hilariously), her parents didn't have any love for Ian Smith and would have returned to Zimbabwe if they still had a home.

White South African here. I know several ex-Rhodesians, or, as they're usually called in these parts, "when-we's". "When we were in Rhodesia, x, y z..." I doubt very much that these regurgitators of racism mention the high levels of PTSD, anger, and so on, among that community.

I remember meeting someone who was born in Rhodesia. It came up in a conversation among a bunch of coworkers "Oh wow you're from Africa? Like South Africa?" "No, Zimbabwe but it was Rhodesia back then." Everyone else "Oh wow, neat!" Me: 😬

They sell "camouflage passports" from Rhodesia. The idea is if you're kidnapped, you show them your camouflage passport & it's not "counterfeit" because it can't be used for real purposes I'd be afraid they recognize it & think I'm a white nationalist & enemy, or worse, a white nationalist & friend

Ugh. Maybe that's where I came across it first. That, or it came up when I was looking at some of these accounts. I think there is a whole genre now in the spirit of The Turner Diaries.

It feels like these guys know Rhodesia was doomed - that it’s impossible to have a sustainable minority-ruled apartheid state without significant violence popping off all of the time, so the violence against brown folks is likely the attraction more than anything else.

the mother jones article seems very poorly researched even a few seconds on google shows you, as I remembered that Reagan was a Rhodesian supporter and this was common on the GOP since then

Zimbabwean here. I still remember seeing that patch on pics of the mass shooter of the black church. I won't write his name... and it gave me chills that someone that young, with no connection to the country, had gotten into "Rhodesia" content.

The link to Mike Collin’s X account with his posts on Trump and the out of context Blood Diamond movie meme are shocking enough, but his lunatic replies are just outright eliminationist. Not everyone in this country is so murderous, but it will be enough to destroy us if we let it.
