NATO can't protect Europe from Russia because the US has defected. The EU can't because UK is no longer a member. The UN can't because of Russia & US. We need a body with Europe + UK but not Russia + US, with existing admin infrastructure. What I'm saying is: arm the Eurovision Song Contest.

Ukraine bought us time to build European defence with their blood. I hope we are ready, because we will need to brace hard once Ukrainians stop depleting russian military potential. Counter-mobility measures, preparedness of society as a whole, in addition to military means.

It's a (notionally) democratic body, it can render decisions from all its member states within a couple of ours, and it has already shown it learnt an important lesson from 20th century conflict: if you want to hold buck the Russians, send a bunch of terrifying Finns.

This would also allow Australia to do what it has historically done in post-WWII conflicts: send a contingent that's controversial just for being there but doesn't really determine the eventual outcome.

it's kind of funny (as an Australian) how so many of the replies to this have been either "ewww, no, Australians" or "yay, bonus Australians!" We're like coriander, apparently.

Right now there’s hardly any Russian military presence at the borders with the EU. Two Estonian battalions can march to Moscow and arrest the entire Kremlin without meeting resistance. But if Russia succeed in conquering Ukraine, we will have a war within 10 years.

"Grandpa, why was Australia fighting a war in Europe?" "Well, it's all got to do with being a member of the European broadcasting union, and that channel that's all rude stuff and Hitler was a member of something. Would you like to hear how WW1 started, it might be simpler?"
