Clarification: this refers to the Shah-era Iranian flag, not every Iranian flag. Per NYT reporting, FIFA barred that version of the Iranian flag. The point of the video is that FIFA claims to be apolitical while deciding which political/national symbols fans may display. That is newsworthy.

I understood they were specifically taking away the pre-1979 flags as provocative political symbols, and not the current flags of the Islamic Republic. I may be wrong, so do correct me if I am.

Okay, so pre-current regime flags of (the IR of) Iran are FIFA prohibited political speech. What about pre-current regime flags of other participating countries? If a Korean fan, rooting on South Korea brought the pre-division flag, would FIFA prohibit it? How about a unified Yugoslavian flag?

I have no idea (and do not have an NYT subscription). I doubt FIFA or other fans brought their concerns to court. I read about the pre-revolution IRR/FIFA litigation/ruling from a different news source. Litigation is not a necessary precursor for consistent event policy and rules for fan conduct.

Constitution says that the government cannot restrict speech (unless it is dangerous speech), not that private events can’t limit free speech. FIFA can limit speech at their events just like you can kick someone out of your house if they say something offensive to you.

They are literally doing the opposite of what you state, these are Iranian exiles flying the flag of the Shah specifically to antagonize the Iranian national team, and they knew the flag would be banned beforehand. Please read literally anything about this stuff before popping off.

Ok,I've read & listened to several overviews.So there were some Iranian exiles waving the flag that implies support for monarchy & some flags(no crown)that support NOT THE REGIME,but rather actual DEMOCRACY.Divisive?Yes,maybe,but they've the right to express their views too.& FIFA efforts stopped.

Freedom of speech does not apply in private facilities. I think FIFA is dumb for this but if they were in public (sidewalk for example) then the flag can’t be banned but private facilities can set rules for what is or is not allowed.

NYT was just the first search result and it's straightforward reporting: FIFA got a court to uphold its ban on this specific flag. As to what that flag means, this post and its follow-up are less simplistic than what I said:

I suppose the real question is, why would we disapprove of a flag used in resistance against the current regime? Given how much we've spent bombing the Revolutionary Guard, you would have thought the pre-1979 flag would be freely distributed, not confiscated. Weird.
