From accessibility standpoint, this could create issues with contrast, legibility/conceivable for low-vision human users. It is also likely that this is not official yet due to more research/maturity to ensure all standards are not compromised while embracing this new CSS feature.

in shipped in Safari 18.2 today, in case that helps pacify concerns about incomplete standards i'm interested in the scenarios where this hurts contrast tho, or makes something difficult for low vision users. in some ways, it makes legibility easier, as things can line up better: less eye strain

Finally! I proposed something like this years ago but it never got beyond the discussion stage as it was too tricky at the time. Great it's happening!

when designers get the red lines out and show you how even amounts of padding might not necessarily create centered even results

Interesting - the CSSWG draft says "Do not ship (yet)". Is it normal that Chromium intends to ship it despite this?

Safari intends to ship it in 18.2 too This was true for a while, but afaik, this is lifted except for the CJK ideographic features. I'll ping the spec authors and find out!
