I don’t think it does critics of that circle any favors to call it a “sex cult.“ Whether us boring, monogamous vanilla normies want to believe it or not, there are a lot of people who participate in polyamory, sex parties, etc. Calling it a cult as a result just costs people credibility. 

it’s a sex cult because of the way it acts like a sex cult. I know lots of people who have group sex and are in polycules who are perfectly normal and cool. That is not what is happening here for a bunch of reasons, chief among them “huge amounts of money and power are involved.”

you stop being able to play the “we are but a smol bean polycule like anybody else in a coastal city” card when billions of dollars and vast power are involved

As @soniajoseph.bsky.social says, context is everything in understanding consent. Back in 2018, I wrote an essay exploring tech’s antipathy to consent, both rooted in, and reifying, patriarchy. It’s only gotten worse with AI.

There are many reasons I left tech to become a romance writer. lol

I’m only peripherally aware of the kink scene, but I’m pretty sure adding LSD and workplace hierarchies to the mix takes the consent out of CNC.

I would push back on this, as someone who enjoys sex on drugs. You can't consent *while high*, but you can certainly concent to drug sex prior to getting high. You can get as granular as you want about what is and isn't okay. But sex on drugs is fantastic, and I'd hate for that to go away 😅
