I've been bopping in & out in between reading other things, but I did just finish book 3 and have downloaded book 4, for those keeping track of my DCC journey! I have a lot of chores/organizing/cleaning to do over the next week so I may make it through this book faster than the last one. We'll see!

there was a point during the first boss fight (no spoilers) where I walked away for like 2 weeks b/c I was irritated, but I picked it back up & as the book went on I felt like I could see which parts were deliberate and the point they were trying to make more clearly. I enjoyed enough to get book 2!

I am not a gamer, the only video games I have ever played are Tetris and Mario Kart with my kid when he was younger. I don't think that's the problem for me? It just felt like starting with book 4, everything felt too bloated. I made it through that book bc I was listening...

but I really lost track of a lot of it. And the 5th book just feels way too overweighted, too long, too flabby. I mean, I guess that can be about the gaming stuff? But it doesn't feel that way to me. It just feels like it could be half the length.

I feel like I have a terrible idea of how long something is when I'm listening to it because I do it sporadically for 5 or 15 or 30 minutes at a time, so I'm interested to see how I feel when I get to 5

It's the sort of book that I definitely think could be fun to discuss if social media wasn't currently a shitshow of media illiteracy and defensive fandom and I don't feel like wrestling with either side right now. But I really am interested in the wide range of non-gamers I see reading these!

They feel so aggressively niche gamer to me, if you are a non-gamer reading them I would love to hear if you find any of that tedious or overwhelming. I'm having a hard time imagining what the experience would be if you're not a big gamer, but they have CLEARLY broken containment in a huge way.

(I also wonder if the audiobooks are part of that magic. A lot of people I see talking about them who aren't gamers are listening to them, and I gotta hand it to the narrator: it's impressive that I am not sick & fucking tired of hearing "New Achievement" already??? lol)

I'm also reading a SECRET ARC I can not talk to you about but omg omg omg omg. And also a NOT SECRET ARC that I want to tell everyone about, which is @alyssacolelit.bsky.social's next thriller IT TAKES A VILLAGE, and if I didn't love her so much I'd hate her for being this fuckin' good, y'all.

us.macmillan.comIt Takes a VillageNew York Times bestselling author Alyssa Cole is back with another chilling thriller, set in the world of her megahit When No One Is Watching. It was too good...

I think the audiobook is how I made it through the first book, because I feel like reading all of those stats and achievements with my eyes would’ve been tedious? But the narrator is SO GOOD! Mr M and I listened together on our walks and that was fun, too! Need to get the next queued up.

Hello! I am so thoroughly not a gamer I think the last non-puzzle game I played regularly was like Kirby's Dreamland on Gameboy, and I tore through those books! At first the videogame world-building stuff was really distracting, but eventually the characters and truly BONKERS plot won me over.

Yeah, the characters are super vivid for sure. I like that in book 3 I'm getting to see more of the other crawlers now, too! but some of the video game stuff was even distracting for me, so I really wondered how folks were dealing with it!

My sister is very much not a gamer, and she has found the first couple of books slightly tedious at times with all of the gamer talk. Ironically, my very-much-a-gamer husband felt the same because he didn't need the mechanics explained that much.

Not a gamer, also not into audiobooks, just finished reading all eight books like the week before last. Enjoyed it but was very ready to be done with it by book 8. Noted down some recs for lit RPG that are supposed to be better but I think I need to read other stuff for a while.

I am a non-gamer who is reading through them! (slowly, as my library holds come in) I find the game achievement stuff very clunky but at the same time find the books themselves compulsively readable. After I finished the first I wasn't sure if I liked it or not…but kept on reading.

This was very much my experience! It took until like halfway through book 3 to go from "not sure if I like this" to "I don't understand WHY this is working but it clearly is." I devoured the (extremely long) faction wars book in like 4 days!

Honestly game lit/LitRPG sometimes drags more in audiobook format because you can get excessive stat blocks going and they're harder to skim/skip. I think part of it is the rage and scheming to do something that will make it matter.

I mean I know really talented writers who write in the genre! I don't think it's necessarily just writing. I think that part of it is probably it's extremely accessible and also had the very good luck of breaking out now because our whole reality feels like an absurd video game run by a fucked up AI

Definitely. It's also not the crunchiest game system and I think it lowers the barrier to entry compared to some that have denser stat blocks and abilities and a little less willing to let rule of cool make things just sort of work in the background.
