I am serious, I think every person who wants third parties to thrive in this country should be spending 175% of their time pursuing Ranked Choice. Not only does it make it safe for everyone to vote their hearts first & their brains as a safety net, but it penalizes running far too hateful/divisive.

I remember in 2000, after Bush v Gore, 17-year-old me doing a deep dive on voting systems and the electoral college and third parties. I still carry those lessons with me, and the biggest one is that until we change the voting system, we have 2 viable parties and that's it. binary choice.

NYC's church going centrist to conservative democratic voter block loved that guy. And it was a big chunk. And they turned out bigger than the progressives. Simple math. Thank God the Republicans here and generally are so racist or they would be much stronger in NYC.

Multiple voting is a simpler method that requires less explanation and is easier to tabulate (though ranked choice isn't as complex as NY made it either). Essentially you'd *as many* candidates as are acceptable to you. Whoever has the most votes wins, and you still get viable consensus.

My typical vote in CA's terribly designed top-2-open-primary votes is either "a third party candidate if there is one" or "the second-most-popular Democrat so the runoff is D-D instead of D-R." It's a mess, and voting for the 3rd-party candidate is mostly to help them keep some ballot status.

Why, exactly and only, Ranked Choice? It compares very poorly with other potential balloting/tabulation methods. As little as it's been tried, there are already cases of questionable or downright bad result, complexity leading to implementation errors, failure, and repeal.

Problem is the elected executive presidency, it's effectively a single member district so it always go back to us vs them But some sort of runoff or preferential system allows for change--Macron did it in France, etc Preferential voting is the best, the Irish system for Congress would help as well
