Something about Tiktok getting banned for the potential of Chinese access to our data and then Americans banding together to make the direct Chinese version #1 on the app store the next day is poetic. What a weird chapter in this history books this will be

What people don't understand is that Trump was initially a supporter of banning TikTok, but recently he found out that the Chinese regime, and the Russias are working for his cause. They want the same world order of strongmen who rule all countries, which is why he has changed his position.

it just blows my mind how many people are suddenly okay with flocking to a social media app from a country where you can’t promote anything LGBTQ+ related, have to photoshop out minorities from movie posters (Finn from star wars), and it’s literally illegal to publicly criticize the government

I get where you're coming from. I think it's really...complicated. I still mean it that Gen Z has far more self invested intentions. They may not agree with the censoring but they'll agree with the entertainment. Do you think the influx of Americans will change anything on the app?

I'm not a big fan of tiktok nor the Chinese government, but if you really think the reason it's being banned is 'national security', I have a bridge I'd like to sell you. The reason it's being banned is because silicon valley doesn't want the competition.

So...clearly Tiktok algo is pumping videos encouraging users to download Rednote. So like...the Chinese gov is using ByteDance/Tiktok to persuade Americans to give their data to Rednote, a CCP controlled application? 🤔

Even after they ban it we can always get it updated via third party sites. Sucks for you iPhone users that are stuck with only being able to install via the appstore. Most Android devices come with a vpn if you're worried about being tracked.

I joined Red Note partially because the US govt made it clear they don’t want us on Chinese apps, but… I love it over there. The people are so kind, the content is so cute and creative, and there are no ads 🥹

Americans are addicted to the pseudo reality of social media. Most would have no idea what to do with themselves if something wasn’t feeding it to them.

Last time I checked US-based platforms didn’t instantly ban you for posting a candle 🕯️ emoji on the anniversary of a massacre. I say this as much as I dislike US control of popular social media: The grass sadly isn’t really always greener on the other side. Chinese censorship is far far stricter.

I just wish some didn’t think it is a viable alternative. It’s a hilarious joke, but I’m seeing large creators move over there, as if it’s not also going to be banned eventually since it’s actually owned by a foreign adversary.

My kid (adopted as an infant from China) was JUST telling me about this. She finds it hilarious that young Americans are offering their data directly to a different Chinese company in response to the American government trying to shut the site out of the US. I just think it's mayhem out there.

I find it funny, USA freaks out about Chinese backdoors in software and hardware like decades of Intel processors didn't have backdoors in them for exactly the same reasons. "hey, only OUR Government is allowed to spy on our own citizens".. err, except, that's actually the opposite of true.

It could be all the fake accounts run by the Chinese government or TikTok, who switch to that app to encourage people to move there as well. 🤷🏽‍♂️

governments can't stop tech. They couldn't stop the printing press, nor internet streaming, nor will they be able to stop social media or other advancement like EVs. Advancements in tech that improve peoples lives always wins out over regulation.

Might be time to leave social media. These companies have a perceived sense of power, but their power only comes from the fact that people stay there. JUST LEAVE!

Red note is not the direct version of TikTok in China. That would be Douyin. Red note is their version of IG or Pinterest, just with a UI very similar to TT.

If not Elon, then some other tech bro that is woefully out of touch with the people. Meta and Snapchat would both benefit as well with TikTok going away. And if they actually had a product that competed then it might work. But they don’t, so it won’t.
