i know everyone has been dying for my take on emily wilson's review of nolan's odyssey and so here it is. it should be an embarrassment to whoever edited it. when a writer files copy like that, you should know how controversial it will be and go above and beyond to help them shore up their take.

once a writer of a review is on bluesky writing extremely long numbered threads and even apologies to correct their own already-published story, that story's editor should be personally apologizing to the writer for having failed them so fucking hard. you do NOT want to see that happen.

i don't agree with a lot of wilson's points, but from an editor's perspective, i can see some ways that the entire argument could be much stronger and more cohesive, not as a film review per se but as a far more direct comparison to the original poem and a critique of what nolan chose to change.

anyway, if one of y'all is ever filing a story like that, you should know what you have, and if an editor takes a very light touch to it, you should know that you are getting fucked. i've had it happen to me before; there are absolutely published takes of mine that i think are dumb af. it happens...

Totally unrelated to her review of the movie, I immediately put her translation of the Odyssey on my Libby hold list. Truly excited to read a modern translation by someone who is such an expert.

I've very rarely had editors do any kind of editing of my work while in games media. It has made me feel very self-conscious because I'm not sure if I'm writing anything good or not. It has also robbed me of opportunities to grow out of bad habits because I don't even know if they are bad.

Excellent thread, but would be even better if someone could review it, then we can have a review of the thread that reviews Wilson's review of Nolan's movie based on Wilson's translation.

I think Wilson either watched a different movie or fell asleep whenever Penelope was talking. Nolan's Penelope wasn't sitting around yearning for Odysseus, she was managing a neverending frat party that attendees wanted to end with her assault, a tough geopolitical situation, a kingdom, and her son
