The media made a HUGE deal out of "basket of deplorables" and "cling to their guns or religion." But, of course, it will totally ignore Trump saying he hates Democrats: "I hate them. I believe they hate their country."

in addition to his "shylocks" comment, i can't imagine the media backlash if Biden said anything like from this screenshot - that he "hates Republicans" - and i'm also tired of having this "IMAGINE IF BIDEN!" thought experiment but it's just a constant reminder of the double standards

Big double standard for sure - but I believe the media made a big deal about that because the Republicans made a Huge deal out of that. R’s are great at keeping a topic alive and in front of the media.

Classic Trumpian projection. HE hates America as it is today. That is what drives everything he is doing. But I think more than his animus toward others is his self-loathing.

I participated in some Massachusetts 250th anniversary events this year. We’re a bit ahead of the rest of you on this whole revolt against the king thing. But I find it hard to get behind anything more.

Lol Trump told my parents to hate Dems and they got a big surprise when they found out I vote blue and im just like ✌ I always knew you hated me stay mad about it (You don't grow up with racist conservatives as a closeted kid and NOT find out how hateful these people are, 0 emotional intelligence)

I'm going to quibble a little here. It's not the "I hate them" that is comparable, it's the "they hate their country." The basket of deplorables/cling were about the other side, "I hate democrats" alone is about one's self. BUT... that isn't to say it shouldn't be a WTAF point...

Um, the person you’re citing as a source here is literally in the media (at NBC). And it’s at the top of the NBC News app right now. Plenty of reasons to criticize the media, but credit where it’s due, please!

There’s a lot riding on that ONE example when we know it’s about multiple examples and the constant drumbeat of the media on whatever the narrative shapes up to be. Yes, NBC reported it factually…but will the hammer the topic relentlessly for WEEKS like they did with “garbage”?

I feel that if they did cover it and he was asked about it his response would be “I only hate them because they hate me first, they hate the country. If they loved the country they’d love me and I’d love them back but they can’t, they can’t love me they won’t love me. They started it…”

He conflating himself with "country". He does this a lot. "If you don't like Trump, you don't like America" is basically what he and his grovelling followers are saying every day. It's quite toxic.

It’s stochastic terrorism. He’s slowly radicalizing his followers to accept & commit violence against their fellow Americans. He continues dehumanizing and demonizing anyone who doesn’t agree with/follow him, it won’t just be the undocumented in those concentration camps.

It's all projection. If you have intact eyeballs and/or a functioning brain, you can see who hates America (hint: it's the guy actively destroying everything good and honorable about America while cranking the worst of our country's flaws up to 11)

Trump was, at the point of the Biden garbage comment, also making it pretty clear he considered Democrats to be "the enemy within." The double standard was there at the time.

Like glenn greenwald and his book on bush-cheney, jake tapper will write a lackluster book on trump when politically convenient and tides have already changed. Don’t forget to not give him any credit in the future.

But I will. I don't take criticism about my patriotism from someone who pardons violent attackers of our Capitol, lawmakers, and their protectors. I don't ascribe perception to someone who can only see two sides--with or against--and where that line exists is up to his feelings at that moment.

I don't find common ground with someone who sees interactions as arenas to dominate regardless of the issue, values, and beneficial outcome. I don't see judgement in someone who only sees value in people who praise him but can't see motives or insincerity.

Being able to look at my country with admiration and disappointment; to acknowledge hubris, vanity, and arrogance coexists with strength, ingenuity, and vision...this makes me love the concept and reality of the US. To deny any of it, is to not respect our journey or appreciate the work it took.
