It dawned on me yesterday that the computer in star trek has to be an AI program of some sort in order to be so responsive to the wide range of queries it receives. However, it exists as a supplemental tool to the extensive knowledge and expertise of Starfleet, not a primary source of information.

Yeah, it depends what we want to define as artificial intelligence. I think you could make something like the computer and star trek with just a huge pile of if statements. Is there some point where we start to count that as intelligent? Maybe. I don't know.
