Darling. A single night eating out could feed us for a week. And we eat good. Shepherd pie. Pork stew. Salmon with asparagus. Homemade toast and jelly. Some of these replies make it sound like folks are eating beef and expensive deli cheese every meal.

The only way eating at home is more expensive is if either 1) you're buying expensive groceries. Like brand name. And just ignoring the store brand stuff 2) you're literally throwing away food Cent per oz will always add up to less than eating out. Always

Rice can feel like a "poor persons bland food" if prepared poorly and without much thought, such as a lazy side to chicken. However, rice is an excellent pairing with a lot fried - especially Asian - dishes, such as katsu

Meat is expensive, and a lot of Americans think you need a pound of it with every meal with a small helping of veggies and bread. Its quite the opposite. Avoid expensive meats like beef. And a normal serving is a quarter pound. Make a thick savory stew with lots of veggies.

If you want to level up your kitchen, ferment at least one thing. Sourdough, pickles, kombucha, whatever. It's a great way to have that something extra to pair with meals or as an ingredient, plus you learn something new about kitchen chemistry.
