Bureaucracy is rules + process Process is a way to enforce rules proactively It may not seem efficient because it intentionally slows thing down. But it’s critical for rule enforcement

As a software person, I like to think of it as languages that are strongly typed and compiled vs interpreted I write code slower in go than python, but it saves me a bunch of time after the software is deployed

I, too, have come around. the constraints annoyed me during my time in academic administration (mostly industry partnerships) but I eventually gained an appreciation. boys wreaking havoc don't know the risks they're creating, whether or not they care. (fwiw, I'm in tech. prev physics + med devices.)

I listened to this podcast episode about bureaucracy awhile back and thought it was very insightful. It discussed things like useful vs harmful bureaucracy and that different amounts of bureaucracy are appropriate for different organizations. www.ted.com/podcasts/wor...
