Maaaan the Halo remake is exhaustingly Modern in its bullshit... Cortana has all kinds of extra tutorial dialogue. The intro of invisible elites, instead of being a scary moment of guys suddenly dropping dead around you, is her going "Invisible elites!! Look for distortions in the air!" Christ alive

It was already something that didn't need to exist. Master Collection was already a great "remake" of it. Really didn't need another one. the technical achievement of Master Collection being able to switch between old and remake graphics on the fly was incredible and made for fun comparisons

Yeah, the problem is that the Anniversary part is actual dogshit. The gamma in so many areas that are meant to be dark and creepy is fucked, the weapon models don't fit the animations, and the mocap is hideous. So I was for giving it a second go but yikes I'm hearing nothing but bad things.

Personally I'd say there are definitely some places where this remake is better than Halo Anniversary edition. The lighting on the 343 Guilty Spark mission actually being dark and scary like the original, instead of ridiculously bright everywhere for example.

This was one of people’s main gripes with the MCC version… lighting plus washing out the colors reduced the readability of the design language that the OG had nailed down well

Also since it's a remake and not adhering to the original level design, they were able to make certain repetitive sections of the game more interesting. I normally dread playing "Two Betrayals" because it's a boring slog that drags on far too long, but it was very enjoyable in this remake.

I've been deeply a Halo fan all my life and I have so little motivation to play the Halo remake at the moment and some of these details kinda affirm that I don't think it will Bring Me Joy to play it or see Halo in that state.

"you get used to one thing and then something scary and unexpected happens" is like, the biggest thing halo 1 does well compared to the other halo games, turning those moments into Tutorials is crazy man

Rewriting Cortana’s lines to make her talk to the player like they’re stupid told me this was gonna be a hard pass. It couldn’t be more clear Microsoft had lost sight of what made Halo appealing in the first place.

I know from my long history of bitching about this sort of thing that most people don't notice or care when a line is bad or badly delivered, but it's such a bummer to me. Especially since I have the type of memory where I can just mentally play back the .wav of the original recording and compare

Like you're in the vents on the Pillar of Autumn and she goes "My analysis indicates the exit will have a green light on it". There's one exit idiot. It's a vent. I don't need a light and I don't need you to tell me what color it is

Increasingly coming in on the side of "all remakes are at best fundamentally unnecessary and at worst actively terrible". Every big budget remake makes 1 million little compromises on cool shit that served as part of the original identity in favour of "modern game design" and "quality of life".

I dunno I think it's something you can do well and worthwhile-ly. Certainly unnecessary but so is most of the best shit in life. I think it just happens to mostly get done on a thoughtless whim by someone who doesn't care much about it

I think you can certainly do it well, there's lots of objectively good remakes out there but I just dislike mostly how the remake has a tendency to displace the original in conversation unless it's particularly controversial or haphazard.

We are forever doomed to repeat the same old issues

I know some folks see the yellow paint discourse as repeating old discussions. But do you have any idea how much of a repeat it actually is? Here is a video from Egoraptor explaining why players feel terrible about being handheld in less than a minute. Can you guess when this video was released?

I'm so unplugged atm that I didn't even know this thing was coming out, and I just fixed my OG Xbox and played the original game. I felt no need for *any* changes other than a more stable frame rate

the Master Chief Collection version is really great these days if you put it on non-remastered graphics and sound. 4k 120hz original graphics, shaders fixed vs the gearbox version, etc
