He's a journalist. He reports the news including quotes from experts. In the same way as most science is reported. Or most engineering is reported. Here is an article about structural faults in a bridge. I wonder if the article was written by a structural engineer?

He's a correspondent and it's his specific beat, and he's written a book about hacking. I'm shocked he'd not even heard of it before.
