You’d think the former CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios would be pretty thoroughly aware of the fact that buying a game license, or any other piece of software, has worked exactly like this for over 40 years

True, but largely that's not been the only option for console gaming. When you choose to buy digital when there's an option not to, that's your choice. But wothout discs being available at all, there's no way to actually own a copy of the media you're "buying." That seems to be his point.

Now add to that the fact that a lot of games no longer fit discs and multi-disc isn’t a feasible solution for most of those games. Discs have been download codes for years now, to the extent that its gaming news when a game *isnt’t* a download code shaped like a disc

There are plenty of solutions to this that don't involve ending physical media. Last time Sony made a disc that could hold more data. Nintendo games fit fully on their cartridges. There are tiny drives that hold terabytes of data. And that comes with a built-in way to justify charging more for it.

that’s not an apple to apple comparison. Yes, some products are license based but games, movies, music has always been the case that when you buy it, you buy a copy of the product. Your copy. So let’s not normalize this enshitification that Sony is trying to pus now. He is right about this topic.

That has actually literally never been the case for any of those things legally speaking. Those things are all modeled very intentionally off of written copyright. Yes, you have a physical copy but just like any book, you own a license that can be revoked at any time not the contents

The fact that you had a physical copy that would still function has been an “unintended side effect” of software licensing from the start. I’m not saying any of that is good by any means, but we keep pretending it’s not the case for some reason

let’s not get into that duplicitous corporate language. When you buy a movie, game or music CD, you buy a licensed copy of that product. And that copy is yours. They are abusing their power and monopoly now and they should be punished.

Your argument is, like Sony's in court, disingenious. Nobody is pretending that say that "buy" means I own the Spiderman IP because I bought Spiderman the game. The point is that I own my copy of the game and can do with that copy whatever I want.

People are aware that the completed game does not come on any discs these days, right, or was there a collective ignorance I didn't subscribe too?
